This is our recap from yesterday’s club meeting!

 

  • We began by briefly mentioning the homework from last week, which was to watch the NCFCA team policy exhibition round and write down what the teams used to open, conclude, and give roadmaps in their speeches. I reminded the debate students that this is a great way to find wording that they can use in their speeches.  
  • We watched the following video on confident body language:
  • After the video the students did impromptu speeches in small groups to practice what they learned from the video as well as what we covered in our last meeting about organizing your speech and using quality vocabulary words. 

  • After the speech practice time, the students learned about “voting issues.” Information on voting issues came from the following article:

  • After discussing voting issues, I reminded the students to pronounce difficult or confusing names the best they can with confidence. The judges are not looking at the evidence so they likely won’t know if it is the correct pronounciation or not.
  • I also shared with the club that they will be introducing themselves to the judges and shaking their hands before each round at tournaments.

After debating, we concluded with the following annoucements:

  1. The NCFCA website has a new look. To log in, you need to select “dashboard” at the top of the page to get to the log in page.
  2. Eden has continued to update the club website, so be sure to go there to find information that you need to know about club. Most recent updates: Gallery (under “updates”), CHAP families (under “about us”) & resources. Coming soon: CHAP shop page.
  3. Joanne Johnson set up GroupMe for our club. If you want to be able to commmunicate easily with others in our club, be sure to join the group me account. It is under our club name (christos apologia of chareston).
  4. Melissa Brindis took pictures for our club directory and Eden will be adding them as they come to our club website. Melissa will continue to take pictures of families at our next whole group meeting in October.
  5. The case the kids will be debating next time with be the ACA case in the sourcebook.
  6. Our next two gatherings will be split meetings at homes in Mt. Pleasant, Wadmalaw (Islands), and North Charleston.
