Debate teaching: Rebuttal

First video:

  1. Starting premise: world cares about climate change/unrealistic to say that everyone cares about it
  2. Logic from premise to conclusion: people will happily pay more in taxes/ illogical to say that business want to pay more they make profit, they will protest or raise prices on consumer (have to show the more logical conclusion)
  3. Impact: completely stop climate change/ unreasonable because there are many causes/Also saying that it will shut down coal plants/ that is not good.

Weighing arguments: Proving your argument is true, is not enough. You must prove yours argument is more important and outweighs. You can outweigh positively or negatively.

  1. Magnitude: how big? Numbers are compared. 1000 lives versus 10 lives. (severity/without numbers.
  2. Probability: how likely is it to happen. Asteroid impact with the earth.
  3. Timeframe: how quickly will it happen? (how fast it will happen how long will it last)
  4. Meta weighing is the mechanisms
  5. Scope: number of areas it affects
  6. irreversibility.
  7. Quality of evidence, credentials of author, most current date
  8. Weigh the framework if you have different ones; use the framework if you have the same one, to weigh which side best upholds the framework.
  9. Topicality: which arguments best line up with the resolution
  10. Do your impact uniquely solve the problems and the opponents would still happen.
